Sentimental Saturday: Duck Hunt

Coolest game ever, almost.  What can I say about Duck Hunt that you don’t already know, hmm.  Well why don’t we start off with the absolute basics.  Duck Hunt was a game for the NES that was like a double feature kinda thing piggy backed onto Super Mario Bros.  The most exciting thing about Duck Hunt was the fact that you got to use a flipping gun!  You know how exciting that is to a five year old?  Yeah granted maybe sometimes they/we just walk right up to the screen so there isn’t actually any challenge in shooting the targets but they/we still got to shoot a gun.  Every other aspect of this game is super self explanatory.  You know the saying “Whats in a name?” well the game is about hunting ducks if you haven’t gotten it yet.   In my family we would have Clay Pigeons competitions to see who could shoot the most.  Me being the youngest often didn’t do the best.  Man, I’m still hung up on that light gun.  They should make the same exact one for the Wii so you could play shooting games and still feel old school.  Anyway, Duck Hunt.  Good game.  If they have it on the VC it would be a must get but until then I’ll keep shooting crows in Resident Evil 4:  Wii Edition.

Thursday’s Review on Monday’s Releases

So while I was on a sailing voyage, a Monday slipped passed my grip.  So today, Thursday, will be my make up of Virtual Monday.  Monday September 22nd was a good day for Nintendo Wii owners that enjoy good classic games.  First and foremost on the WiiWare Mega Man 9 was released, by far the most amazing WiiWare game so far.  The game is just like the other earlier Mega Man games were, like the ones on the NES and stuff.  I enjoy the Mega Man series and particularly enjoyed Mega Man X I did not at all like the new Mega Man whacked out games.  I played one and had no clue what the heck was going on.  Anyway the story for Mega Man 9 is Dr. Wily is deeply sorry for the crimes he committed then out of nowhere Dr. Lights robots go crazy and start attacking the city.  Dr. Wily comes onto T.V. claiming he was not responsible and all this was the fault of Dr. Light.  Of course since he recently apologized for his past crimes there is no way he could be responsible for this attack, so is Dr. Light really a criminal?  Is Dr. Wily really a good guy?  I HIGHLY recommend you buy this game, its only 10 bucks and its a classic awesome Mega Man game.  I will warn you, if you are so visually oriented and think that graphics are the most important part of the game (which is seriously wrong) AND you don’t like classic games, this game might not be the one for you.  Well following up this awesome WiiWare game, Super Dodgeball (way self explanatory) came out for the NES.  And for the Sega Genisis, Vectorman.  Vectorman is a pretty cool game, its about bad robots and your a good robot that decides to destroy the bad ones and return Earth to the awesomeness it started as.  So, YES to Mega Man 9 for sure, if you don’t get it the world’s axis will be re-aligned ever so slightly that the ocean will boil in the summer due to Earths proximity to the Sun.

Sentimental Saturday: Sonic the Hedgehog

Dr. Robotnik.  Period.  He is awesome, I mean what kind of name is Robotnik and that stache of his, I mean WOW is he ever.  Todays Sentimental Saturday is about the countless Sonic games, but mainly 1 and 2 because they are the good classics.  Sonic, first of all, is a blue hedgehog that runs really fast.  Dr. Robotnik is the bad guy in the game that turns cute little animals into enemies that sonic has to defeat.  Through the level you have to collect gold rings in order to stay alive.  In the game you don’t have health but as long as you have at least one gold ring you can get hit.  If you collect enough gold rings in one level at the end you will get to play a little bonus level thing where you get to get a Chaos Emerald.  These are major plots points in most Sonic games.  Dr. Robotnik steals them or something and you need to collect all of them.  Anyway, I wasn’t a huge fan of Sonic really until Tails came along.  Tails was the coolest fox I’ve ever seen in a video game.  So Sentimentally this has been a Saturday.

So today was the release of Star Wars Force Unleashed and I picked it up at about 8:00 this morning.  As I said before sometime, I was really excited about this game because I’m  big Star Wars fan and the story line seemed to be one of the coolest I’ve heard about for a while.  When I started playing it wasn’t all new, thanks to the demo.  But it was a bit different seeing as you start out playing as Darth Vader.  I’ll try not to have any spoilers in this article, and if that just spoiled your Force Unleashed experience you must not have had a clue about what the game was about.  Anyway the game started out slow, literally.  Darth Vader is slower and a bit more sluggish than his apprentice, the main character of the game.  Usually in fighting games being slow denotes more power.  Yes.  Darth Vader is one bad guy, and very powerful.  The Force in this game is incredible, its like power beyond imagination.  The game has upgradable force powers and upgradable lightsabers, which is a net feature.  I’m still a little unsure how the upgrades actually work but I know that you collect points but killing stuff and people.  A lot of the environments are destructible which makes it really fun to use Force Push.  This is an average game.  I would have said it was a really good game except for the fact that it is mostly hack and slash.  Sometimes there is no problems with hack and slash games, like this one.  It doesn’t make it soo bad that you don’t want to play it, plus you have to play it, it fills in the gap between Episode III and Episode IV.  So there is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for the Xbox 360.

Virtual Monday: September 15th

I was going to start off with the line, “Today is Monday,” but if I’m talking about the Virtual Console and the title of the post is Virtual Monday I think you will be able to come to the conclusion that today is most likely Monday, unless its not Monday, then you might be confused.  But today for the Wii was more of a WiiWare day then it was a VC day.  The only game to come onto the VC today was Mega Man 2, which isn’t bad that it came out I just prefer more than one VC game a week.  Anyway Mega Man 2 is for the NES and is 500 points.  While Mega Man is a big game today its more than likely because of Mega Man 2 more than Mega Man.  Well technically not due to the fact that if there was no Mega Man there would be no Mega Man 2 but thats besides the point.  Mega Man 2 was very popular and it sold a lot of copies, really making the Mega Man series.  If your a Mega Man fan today there is probably a lot of things that you like in today’s games because of their start in Mega Man 2.  Now for the WiiWare there was a strange game called Potpourri.  This game is one bizarre puzzle game.  Its a seasonal game?? And the seasons get messed up and it starts snowing during sunny days.  This deeply confuses the leprechauns, and don’t forget the mysterious purple goo.  O and the magical Oak leaf must be pretty important because it lost its power due to a Evil Wizard.  So this game is an interesting puzzle game.  The Next WiiWare title is Strong Bad’s Cool Game episode 2.  Personally I’m a big fan of Homestarrunner.com, I’ve watched it for a good while now.  And this second Strong Bad game is about Strong Badia.  So it has to be a good game.  There it is, Monday’s releases on the Nintendo Wii.

Sentimental Saturday: Blades of Steel

Well for starters I actually missed Saturday, I was at Six Flags all day and when I got home I couldn’t do anything but sleep.  But today is Sunday and I’m posting about yesterday.  If you can’t understand why its Saturday on a Sunday don’t worry too much it will work out for the best.  Anyway today (Sunday) I will be sharing my sentiment about Blades of Steel for the NES.  This game rocked.  It was a big game in our house due to my fathers love of hockey.  So basically this game is about hockey but when I was young the best part of it was in before the third period who ever was first player got to play a short game that was kinda like Gradius.  I found it funny that there was an add in a video game for another video game, but it was both Konami so I figure it was ok for them to do that.  Recently when Blades of Steel was released on the VC I purchased it so me and my brother could play and reminisce.  The game itself against the computer is quite frustrating, it seems every time that you score the computer comes back and scores one on you.  Also the goalie is directly controlled by you all the time so if you are trying to play defense you might just want to let your cpu control the defense and thing about your goalie.  This game is a great multi-player game for you and your friends, if your into old school hockey.  So thats that, and this is a Sentimental Saturday only on a Sunday.

A Game in the Life

Today I was playing some awesome video games.  For starters I was playing Halo 3 with some friends, which is almost always a good thing to do.  But the big game I was happy about playing today was Fire Emblem:  Path of Radiance.  I have had this game for a while but haven’t played much.  The other day in the store I found Radiant Dawn and really wanted to play a new Wii game but didn’t want to wait till Tales of Symphonia 2:  Dawn of the New World.  So I was playing Path of Radiance and thinking how wonderful the Fire Emblem games are.  The stories are so deep and the character development is really good, I enjoy the support conversations you can have between characters to build relationships.  Maybe all the plots are an evil King dominating the world but honestly, its not getting old.  My favorite character has to be either Ike or Ephraim.  I am a big fan of the Fire Emblem series and can’t wait to see more games to come to this series.  I hope that some of the Japanese Fire Emblems come to the Virtual Console.

Virtual Monday: September 8th

Hey all.  Today is indeed Monday so there is a new release on the Nintedo Wii’s Virtual Console.  I’m basically really anxious for Mega Man 9 to come out on Wii Ware and I was really hoping for today but no.  So today we’ll start with the Wii Ware title, Groovin’ Blocks.  This is a music/puzzle game that appears to be somewhat like tetris.  Ummm.  Yeah thats about all I really have to say about that other than the fact that I think that some video game companies are still trying to cash in on how well tetris did.  For the Virtual Console today it was a Japanese day for sure.  We got two games that were imported for the TurboGrafx 16.  The first one is titled Cho Aniki and is an action shooter game for 900 Wii points.  As I was doing some research on the game I found that it is one of those weird games.  Not weird like weird but weird like maybe Japanese humor.  Now, honestly the first Cho Aniki (the one on the VC) wasn’t nearly as awkward as the later games in the series but it still has it weirdness.  Now I can’t judge the game based on that.  Its a good action shooter like Gradius, you collect power ups and just get through the level.  Now before I say something about this game that might offend someone I’m going to move on to the next game.  Final Soldier is another one of those scrolling shooter games.  In Final Soldier bad guys from the 23rd Century attack earth and its up to you to fly around the screen blasting away at anything else on the screen thats not you.  For 700 Wii Points this TurboGrafx 16 game is sure to be the one your looking for, if your looking for Final Soldier.   Well this has been a very Japanese Virtual Monday, until next time Sayonara.

Remember how I said the Cho Aniki series was weird? I might have meant gay.

Sentimental Saturday: Shining Force

Well let me just start by saying I didn’t necessarily grow up playing this game like the other ones, but I did play it in the ’90s so it probably counts.  Anyway, I’m a pretty big RPG fan and this game really rocks my socks off, almost.  So when it came out for the VC I jumped all over it (not literally but figuratively.)  So Shining force is an AMAZING game, its a strategy RPG, I guess I should mention turn based, with an amazing story line that really kept me playing it through the parts that were a bit challenging.  If you’ve played any Fire Emblem game then you know what to do Shining Force.  So this awesome story line includes on mighty bad guy named Dark Dragon who is just waiting to come destroy the land of Rune.  So the game starts off with Max in Guardinia who is just chilling with Lowe and then BAM something bad happens so he decides to go on a journey to save the world from certain destruction.  Along the way you pick up friends and allies that also figure that saving the world would be a good idea and they join you merry band.  ”You have my sword”,- Luke, “And you have my bow,” – Hans, “And my axe!” – Gort.  Now in all serious that was actually taken from Lord of the Rings, but if you didn’t know that and you are reading our gaming website, we have different problems.  So this game is an incredible great purchase for only 800 Wii points considering the amount of time I’ve already spent on it.  Alright, well its been quite Sentimental here today and I think we here at Clix Games might actually call it a Sentimental day and get on with our lives.  Till next time this is Icarus from Clix Games.

Virtual Monday: September 1st

Well happy Labour day everybody.  I hope your enjoying your time away from your hard work.  Anyway today is Monday and that means VC games come out today.  Today was a wonderful day, RPG fans are really glad this Labour day, today released for the SNES was Super Mario RPG:  Legend of the Seven Stars.  Super Mario RPG was released in America on May 13 1996 and was the first RPG game involving our beloved Italian Plumber.  Square developed the game (of course they did, its a good RPG who else makes those?) under the production of Shigeru Miyamoto.  This game is outrageously hard to find and pretty expensive once you do find it.  But now that its on the VC all you need is 800 Wii points and a Nintendo Wii.  Also on the VC today was a game called Clu Clu Land.  This aquatic puzzle game is on the NES and available for 500 Wii points.  I’ve played this game once before but not for the NES, it was in Animal Crossing for the Nintendo Gamecube.  And lets see what we have for the Wii Ware today, My Aquarium came out.  My Aquarium, like the name implies, is a fish simulator that lets you own fish without the worries of allergies or them pooping everywhere, wait that was Nintendogs.  But yes Wii Ware was a bit lame but at least we got Super Mario RPG today, which is a definite purchase.  Well this is Icarus and this has been a Virtual Monday.
